Stamper (James H.) Papers, 1864
While pining away for his sweetheart, a Confederate Cavalryman writes of the recent action in Western Virginia. Autograph letter signed, four pages, octavo, dated May 18, 1864 from "Camp Near Saltville Va" and written to "Dear Miss Judy" - Stamper's sweetheart, Miss Judy A. Walker. Stamper, a lieutenant with the 1st Kentucky Mounted Rifles (also known as the 3rd Kentucky Cavalry Battalion) had been in at least two heavy fights with the enemy, "...we done the best we could 250 of us held the yankees in check untill the Brigade got out of the way the commander said we saved all his men...I lost 6 killed and 4 wounded in my company...", but still writes of his love for Miss Walker and hopes "...the happy day will soon come that I can call you my own I intend to be true to all my promisis to you you are the girl that won my heart and you are the one that I intent to marrey...I will bring my letter to a close by saying that I still remane your true lover untill death..."
