MARRIAGE REGISTER & BONDS
Compiled by Martha Stamper, especially for, and published in
"The Stamper Stage"Dec.1978/Mar.1979

Special note added by Sherry Griggs: The marriage of A. J. Stamper to Laura Jordon also shows up in Rowan Co NC. The interesting tidbit is that they W. H. Mills officiated, (no details or dates). This appears to be the same W. H Mills who also married Stampers in Iredell Co NC; namely James M. Stamper to M. A. Alley; and Gilbert Alexander Stamper to Laura Mills.

ed.note: North Carolina has one marriage register for the entire state in one index. For those searching this index, you should be aware that there are several bonds which were not included in the index. These are located at the beginning of the index. Take a few extra moments to assure yourself that you have not missed anything. Many bonds do not mention the bride and that group of bonds is located at the beginning of the bride index. Again, just a couple of extra moments might make a lot of difference.

Looks like Powell Stamper was in Iredell Co., NC at least shortly before 1808. Is this the Powell Stamper from KY? Did Powell have a son who married a Mary Copeland?

LANDMARK NEWSPAPER OF IREDELL CO., NC dated 1874. Complete article (found and submitted by Sherry Griggs): *MURDER IN ALLEGHANY COUNTY-- Just as we go to press a letter from Wilkesboro informs us of the killing of William Wagoner at the house of Jonathan Stamper in Alleghany County, on 3rd ult[?]. Troy Stamper and Milton Stamper are charged with the homicide, and are now in jail. The difficulty originated in a horse swap. Both parties, and others present, were drinking. We have not space for fuller particulars." dated: September 12, 1874.
[comments] About the article from the Landmark Newspaper of Iredell county dated 1874, regarding a murder in Alleghany county involving two sons of Jonathan Stamper, one of which was Troy Stamper... While checking the NC census today for 1880, I found Troy Stamper alive and well....and obviously not in jail. But the biggest find on this listing was the birthplace of his child Hiram (b1869) as being in Indiana. His wife Charlotte (b.1840)is also listed as being born in Indiana. Troy must have been a traveler. Other children were Lauria (b1874 in NC) and son Johnander (b 1875 in NC). .. But the plot thickens. Also listed are two children designated as his daughters but with Indian last names. Eljina Hoppop (b 1862 in NC) daughter and another daughter named Florence Hoppop (b 1871 in NC). How did he get out of the charge of murdering William Wagoner?

First a few words of explanation about the data sources. NC Law in 1815 taxed each free white male between the ages of 21 and 50 "one poll." If no poll is taxed, then the head of family is under 21 or over 50. Free white female heads of family were not taxed. Some poll takers were more diligent than others; some listed a description of the land owned by the tax payers and others did not.
A "land entry" is a claim made to the state for vacant or unclaimed land in early pioneer days. If a records search proved that the land was unoccupied, the land could be purchased. The potential land owner had a year to register the property and pay for it. Sometimes the potential land owner did not buy the land; therefore, a "land entry" is NOT the same as a deed. The most valuable land was always along a waterway. In Ashe County, the major waterway is the broad, ancient, winding New River, which flows north into VA and WV, where it eventually joins the Kanawha. The originals of the land entries are in the NC Archives in Raleigh, as is the 1815 Ashe Co. tax list. To determine if one's ancestor actually purchased land, the actual deeds must be checked. Deed records exist for Ashe County from its founding in 1799.
All of the six Stampers in the 1815 Tax List had many early land entries. I have not attempted to list all of the entries, just the earliest.
Place names (from the NC Gazetteer):
"Crambury" or "Crambery" Creek is Cranberry Creek, which is formed in eastern Ashe County by a junction of Piney Fork and Mulberry Creeks and flows northwest into the South Fork of New River.
"Grassy Creek" rises in Grayson Co., VA (which borders Ashe Co.) and flows southeast into Ashe running into the North Fork of New River. Many pioneer families owned land in both Ashe Co., NC and Grayson Co., VA and intermarried across the border.
"Meadow Fork" is a creek rising in present day Alleghany Co. (which was part of Ashe until 1859) and flows southwest joining Laruel Fork Creek to form Mulberry Creek.
"Little River" is in present day Alleghany Co., once part of Ashe County.

I would like to correspond with anyone who is researching Robert White who appears in Wilkes Co. records 1790-1800. His wife was supposedly Margaret---. Some of his children were in Ashe Co. post 1800, but I can find no record of him there. I am also descended from Jonathan Stamper, Sr.( b. 1719), who eventually settled in Wilkes Co. I will be happy to share my information with anyone on this line.

BILLY TOLIVER ( Wct1000@aol.com)
Jesse Toliver of Ashe Co., NC has been mentioned in several issues lately. As noted in at least one of their articles, Jesse wife is Frances(Frankie) Stamper. I thought an article in the Wilkes County Heritage, Vol. 1, may be of interest as Jonathan Stamper is Frances' Father. The following information is taken from article 1014 "Descendent of Jonathan Stamper." The article was submitted by Samuel E. Sebastian.
"Jonathan Stamper , of English descent, was born in Middlesex County, Va on April 24, 1719, died in Wilkes County in 1799. He was the son of Powell and Mary Brooks Stamper. He was named for his grandfather Jonathan Brooks."
The article also lists children of Jonathan and Rachel Stamper:
1. James married Sara Moore
2. Joshua married Jane Woodward
3. Joel married Nancy Cannaday
4. Jonathan, Jr. married Mary Davis
5. Jacob married Susan
6. Frances married Jesse Toliver
7. Jesse married Barbara
8. Susannah married John P. Burton.
Children of Jesse and Frances Toliver are listed as Jane, Susan, John, Martha, Jacob, Allen, Solomon, Starling, and Hirum.
The article goes on to list Joel, Jacob and Joshua Stamper as well as Jesse Toliver and John P. Burton as serving in the Revolutionary War.
This is the only article in two volumes that I have found any information on a Toliver, with the exception that a Moses Toliver is also listed as a Revolutionary War Soldier from Wilkes Co.
