WALTER STAMPER (1871-1944) 1895-97 Military Service Record
Enlisted at Peterborough on 17 January 1895 in the Northamptonshire
Regiment under a Short Service engagement, "7 years with
the Colors and 5 years in the Reserve". Gave place of birth
as St Nicholas, Lincoln and age on 17 Jan 1895 as 21 years and
no months [actual age 24]. Trade Valet. Name of next of kin given
as "Father 'Henry' Claytons Mansion Lincolnshire".
He obtained a 2nd class certificate of education on 15 Apr 1896.
His regimental no was 4528. He was transferred from the Depot
to Colchester on 8 Apr 1895, posted to Jersey on 6 May 1895,
apptd. unpaid L/Cpl on 16 Jan 1896, paid L/Cpl 24 Sep 1896, promoted
Corp. on 22 Jun 1897, posted to Aldershot on 6 Sep 1897 and applied
for his discharge on payment of £18 on 9 Dec 1897.
1914-19 Military Service Record 1. Enlisted in the Canadian Overseas
Expeditionary Force at Ottawa, Ontario on 24 August 1914. He
stated that he had three years' service in the 2nd Northamptonshire
Regiment and that his date of birth was 24 June 1873. The attestation
paper includes his declaration that the answers to the questions
in the paper are true. There is also a certificate of Magistrate
certifying that the recruit "was cautioned
that if
he made any false answer
he would be liable to be punished
as provided in the Army Acts". 2. He served in the Princess
Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. On 10 August, 1914 the Charter
of the Regiment was signed and on the next day mobilisation began.
Eight days later, it was completed, as old soldiers flocked from
every part of Canada. Out of 1,098 all ranks, 1,049 had seen
previous service in South Africa or in the regular forces of
the British Empire. In addition to personnel from the Royal Navy
and Marines, almost every unit in the British Army had its representation.
Lt Col Francis D. Farquhar, DSO, an officer of the Coldstream
Guards who was Military Secretary to His Royal Highness, The
Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, the Governor-General of Canada,
was selected to command the new battalion. Lt Col Farquhar suggested
that the Regiment bear the name of the Duke's youngest daughter,
Her Royal Highness Princess Patricia of Connaught. The request
was made to the Princess, who graciously consented to the Regiment
bearing her name. The Light Infantry came about because Captain
Gault, a veteran of the South African war, liked the "Irregular
Feel" it gave the Regiment. The full title of the Princess
Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry was too long for everyday
use, and the new unit became known as "PPCLI", with
"PPs" or "Pip Pips", the commonest variants.
The Regiment was best known to the general public as "Princess
Pats" or merely the "Pats", but this partial abbreviation
is discouraged within the Regiment, which now prefers to be known
as the "Patricias". Walter's regimental number was
29 which indicates that he must have commenced his initial enlistment
much earlier than 24 August; his certificate of medical examination
is dated 20 August and his pay record starts from the given date
of enlistment on 12 August at Toronto. 3 On 12 September he was
promoted to Lance Sergeant and on 15 September to Sergeant. His
unit sailed from Canada on 3 October. On 20 December 1914 he
embarked for France from Southampton. 4 On 27 January 1915 he
attended no. 2 Stationary Hospital Boulogne it was stated that
he was suffering from bronchitis. On 30 January he was transferred
to the Hospital Ship St. Patrick, then to the 2nd Southern General
Hospital, Bristol, until he was discharged on 20 February. He
was suffering from diarrhoea: the record states "collapsed
in trenches & taken to Hospital - no blood or mucus. Abdomen
distended. Discharged much better". His pay record notes
that on 1 February 1915 he was promoted temporary Lieutenant:
there was no increase to his rate of pay, but there were unidentified
additional payments. 5 On 24/25 March he embarked for France.
On 8 May 1915 at Ypres he was "wounded and exposed to gas
Wounds
in head shoulder and right thigh were slight, and being surrounded
by Germans was compelled to walk to the enemy dressing station
and have wound dressed. Was sent to Gressin [Giessen, north of
Frankfurt am Main] Camp where wounds healed in six weeks. Was
next sent to Beschofs Werda [Bischofswerda, east of Dresden]
where he developed some cough and ran some temperature. Was thence
sent to Constance and thence back to Mannheim for one month and
thence to Switzerland Aug. 12/16. Had medical treatment there
until Sept. 1917 when he was repatriated". As far as his
regiment was concerned he was reported from base as missing believed
killed on 8 May. On 12 August he was "unofficially reported
prisoner of war at Giessen" and on 30 November as being
transferred to Bischofswerda. On 12 August 1916 came an official
report that he was a prisoner of war at Berne, Switzerland and
an unofficial report that he had been transferred to Hotel Beau
Sejours, Chateau d'Oeux [Oex, east of Montreux]. 6 Jesssie Stamper
is recorded as his wife and next of kin in his attestation papers
and in his pay records as receiving a regular "separation
allowance" of $15.00 per month which continued during the
time he was a prisoner of war; it was $20.00 per month by the
time he was demobilised in 1919. Her residences were recorded
as: 1914: on attestation 34 Greetwell Gate, Lincoln, then 33
Burton Road, Lincoln. 1916: 4 Wordsworth Street, Lincoln. 1917:
1 April, Pension Bon Accueil, Rossinière, Switzerland
[adjacent to Chateaux d'Oex]. 1 August, 4 Wordsworth Street,
Lincoln. 7 On 14 September 1917 Walter was repatriated to England
and admitted to the First London General Hospital, Camberwell,
London S.E. with chronic bronchitis, on 17 September he was transferred
to the Canadian Convalescent Hospital, Bearwood Park, Wokingham.
On 13 October he was transferred to the Canadian Military Hospital,
Kirkdale, Liverpool. On 15 November he sailed from Liverpool
on H.M. Hospital Ship Glenart Castle. 8 On 5 December he was
initially admitted to St.Lukes General Hospital Ottawa, then
to the Military Hospital Kingston, Ontario, Queens than to the
Sir Sandford Fleming Convalescent, subsequently he was an out
patient then on 3 January 1918 readmitted to Fleming. He is recorded
as being discharged from St.Lukes on 5 March 1918. On that day
he was discharged "to category 'E'" from the P.P.C.L.I.
the copy of the original discharge certificate records "his
having been found Medically Unfit for Further Service".
9 On 22 July 1918 he re-enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary
Force at Philadelphia, Pa, USA and was found to be fit. He was
posted to the Canadian Engineers as a Sapper, promoted to L/Cpl.
on 3 August, Corporal on 4 September. When he was demobilised
at Montreal from the 4th Canadian Garrison Regiment on 28 March
1919 he was an Acting C.S.M. No medals are listed on Proceedings
on Discharge.
10 Residences: 5 March 1918: intended residence, 25 Cliff Street,
Ottawa; 29 March 1919: intended residence, 4 Wordsworth Street,
Lincoln, England; c/o Khaki Club, 660 Dorchester Street West,
Montreal, PQ, St. George's Club, Sherbrooke, PQ Civilian profession:
Steward/ Club Manager. When he enlisted in the Northamptonshire
Regt. he gave his age on 17 January 1895 as 21 and no months
so from this one could presume that he was born December 1873-January
1874. This is at odds with the information he gave when he enlisted
in 1914 and stated that his birthday was 24 June 1873. When he
re-enlisted in 1918 he gave his date of birth as 21 June 1871.
A place of birth appears as St Nicholas, Lincoln, Lincolnshire.
His birth certificate records that he was born on 25 Jun 1871
at Tumby, Linconshire. He gave as his next of kin "Father
'Henry' of Claytons Mansion Lincolnshire". I can find no
mention of this establishment in the 1881 Census in Lincolnshire,
searching under Clayton's, Clayton and Mansion, although I did
find two people who had been born at Clayton Le Clay and Clayton,
Lincolnshire but these places were not otherwise listed. I found
Henry SWALE Roman Catholic Priest St Augustine's Church at 20
House, Wellingrove, Lincolnshire; there was a Catholic Priest
resident at The Hall, Hainton, Lincolnshire next to St Francis
of Dales and at Cross Street, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire there
was Henry T. CAFFERATA a Catholic Priest at St Thomas's, but
nothing to link them with Walter. He was a Valet before 17 Jan
1895. He on 17 Jan 1895 enlisted at Peterborough in the Northamptonshire
Regiment under a Short Service engagement, "7 years with
the Colors and 5 years in the Reserve". His regimental no
