Oliver Stamper in his book Descendants of James Stamper 1750-1826 t er ms Ja mes Stamper as “farmer, trapper, hunter, and trader”. He sa ys th at James a nd wife Sarah Moore Stamper arrived in Kentucky someti me betwe en 1796 and 1825 and th at they may have first lived in what is n ow Letch er Co, Kentucky before migrating to M organ Co, Kentucky. Jam es Stamper a pparently had several daughters in addition to t he two so ns identifi ed by Oliver Stamper. The 1790 census of Randolph Co, North C arol ina lis ts a Jammez Stamper with three sons and six daughters. It se ems that mo st or a ll of the daughters had already married in North Carol ina, and wh en James decid ed to accompany his sons to Kentucky they did n ot follo w. James and his wife Sarah are bu ried at or near Grassy Cre ek in Morg an Co, Kentucky. James Stamper's general movements can be docu mented by h is appearan ce in various tax lists and census records: 17 74 - Surry C o, NC tax list 1779 - Randolph Co, NC tax list 1782 - Montgom ery Co, VA t ax list 1784 - Wilkes Co, NC tax list 1790 - Randolph C o, NC census 18 20 - Clay Co, KY censusJames Stamper, farmer, trapper hun ter and tra de r. b.. Nov. 4, 1750- place unknown. M. Sarah Moore, who w as born Au g. 9, 1 749. They migrated to Kentucky from NC between 1796 a nd 1825. Th ey may ha ve lived for a time in what is now Letcher Co, Kentu cky, with th eir so n, or they may have lived in Grayson Co, Virginia, wi th their son T homas T heir last residence in NC wads apparently at or ne ar Grassycre ek in Ash e- County. -Their last abode was in Morgan Co, Kent ucky. James d ied Mar ch 30, 1826, and Sarah March 12, 1839. Both are buri ed in the Stam per ceme tery at or near Grassycreek in Morgan Co, Kentuck y. Have reco rd of only t wo sons.
