Note for: Morris Cox Baker, 15 NOV 1813 - 1 JAN 1877 Index
Burial:
Place: Baker's Grove Cemetery, Sheldon, MO

Individual note:
[Andrew (Andy) Baker 9-27-01.FTW]

From Shirley Wilson's Report March 11, 1989

Morris Cox Baker was born on 15 November 1813 in Ashe County[ North Carolina, the son of Zachariah and Sarah (Cox) Baker. In 1820 and 1830 he was enumerated in the household of his parents in Ashe County, North Carolina. He married Matilda Stamper, apparently in North Carolina, about 1831. Matilda was born about 1814[ reportedly in Ashe County, North Carolina.

In the 1830 census of Ashe County, there are two Stamper families located in the midst of the Bakers. The Soloman Stamper household is the only one with a daughter the precise age to be Matilda [p. 7]. Soloman Stamper was born in 1788, the son of Jonathan Stamper Jr. who was born in 17S7. Jonathan Sr. was the son of Powell and Mary (Brookes) Stamper of Middlesex County, Virginia. Soloman married Elizabeth Sizemore. On 17 August 182S George Sizemore[ Owen Sizemore and Soloman Stamper, all of Ashe County executed a deed to Soloman Stamper for 7 acres of land on Peach Bottom Mountain [Ashe Co. F:19]. witnesses were Jonathan Stamper Jr. and Hiram Stamper. Morris Cox Baker's uncle James Cox inherited a tract of land on Peach Bottom from his father John Cox.

Morris and Matilda's first children were born in North Carolina. It is assumed that Morris migrated to Tennessee with his father Zachariah. If so, their migration date is placed between March of 1833 when Zachariah sold a tract of land in Ashe County and 15 January 1834 when Morris Baker entered 200 acres of land in Tennessee. The land was located on the head waters of Nobusiness Creek on the waters of the Obeds River [Grant Book 28:747 E. TN Grants] in Morgan County, beginning at a double white oak... This land was surveyed on 12 August 1836 [Morgan Co., TN Surveyor's Book C:183]. Zachariah Baker and Kilby Baker were chain carriers for the surveyor.

On 29 November 1834 Morris and his brother Kilby Baker along with Reubin Robertson entered 1000 acres of land in Morgan County on Bone Camp Creek a water of the Clear Fork of the Cumber1and River beginning at a white oak on the trace that leads from Bazel Hennon's...This was surveyed on 29 August 1838 [Morgan Co. Surveyor's Book D:58] and the chain carriers were Nicholas J. Kington and Preston Hennon.

On 10 December 1835 Morris Baker made a 50 acre entry on the bluff of Adam's Creek waters of Obed River "near a line of his old tract," giving him 250 total acres [E. TN Grant Book 23:374]. This 50 acre tract was surveyed on 22 March 1836 [Morgan CO. Surveyor's Book C:164]. Chain carriers were Hiram Baker and Jonathan Baker. It is difficult to locate land precisely when using the metes and bounds system of surveying. However, since this tract and the 200 acre tract apparently adjoined, their general placement can be pinpointed to the far north central portion of present day Cumberland County, directly north of Crossville.

The 1836 tax list of Morgan County, Tennessee reflects these land holdings and lists Morris Baker with 250 acres in District 8. Although no Stamper families were present, one Jeremiah Baker with 400 acres and one James Baker with 540 acres were all three listed side by side.

Although records were found in White County for allied Baker families, it appears that Morris Cox Baker never lived there. He does not appear on the tax list and his name was not found as witness on the Baker deeds registered in white County.

Morris Baker was enumerated in the 1840 census of Morgan County, Tennessee. The numbers in the family match almost exactly with the family information known about Morris Baker. The census lists three males born prior to 1840 whereas the family information indicates that only two sons were born prior to 1840.

In 1845 Eldridge Myatt executed a trust deed to Morris Baker of Morgan County for $1.00 wherein Eldridge mortgaged a 640 acre tract of land plus farm animals on the waters of Elmores Creek [Morgan County F-96]. This grant had been recorded directly following the 200 acre grant to Morris Baker on page 748 of E. TN Grant Book 28. Eldrige Myatt was enumerated in the 1850 census of Morgan County, Tennessee. He was born in 1799 in North Carolina and married Nancy, probably about 1828. Their children numbered 12 and all were born in Tennessee including the oldest, Allender born in 1829.

On 14 November 1847 Morris Baker entered another 50 acres of land in Morgan County on the waters of Nobusiness to include a mill sight on the creek [Morgan County entry book Vol. E, p. 201]. The next day he entered a 100 acre tract on Drownding? Creek [Ibid, p. 203]. There is a Drowning Creek in the northern portion of present day Cumberland County which is believed to be the creek in question. On that same day, Morris entered yet another tract of land -100 acres in Morgan County beginning at a chestnut marked M, running south and various courses for the compliment so as to include Fire Camp Spring [Entry Book E:203]. This would have given him a total of 500 acres of land.

In 1848 the tax list for District 8 of Morgan County lists Morris Baker and Kilby Baker.
On 31 January 1850 Morris Baker sold to J. H. Goss for $75 200 acres of land beginning at a double white oak...in Morgan County, Tennessee [Morgan Book J:151]. Witnesses to this deed were Eldridge Myatt and J. S. Dickson. It was registered on 19 July 1853. The legal description of the land matches the 200 acre tract which he entered in January of 1834 and is presumably where he lived in the ensuing years.

Obviously, not all of the land entered by Morris Baker has been located in the deeds of sale. Adams Creek is currently in Cumberland County. However, Cumberland County has suffered extensive loss of records. The WPA Plat Book and Survey book are the only records extant prior to 1900. On 5 May 1856 J. C. Baker entered 1000 acres in Cumberland County beginning on Z. H. Goss's southeast corner of a 200 acre survey made by Morris Baker [WPA Entry Book 2, 1856-1891 No.3]. This would appear to be Morris Baker's original 200 acre tract which he had sold to J. (must be Z.) H. Goss in 1850. Plat No.68 refers to 2000 acres for J. C. Baker on the waters of Caney Fork [Ibid p. 23]. Entries in 1872 and 1873 from the Entry Book mention "a line of the Morris Baker 50 acre tract" and "J. C. Bakers 1000 acres."

With the sale of his Morgan County land in January of 1850, Morris and Matilda reportedly moved to Arkansas. There were no Baker families in the 1850 census of Morgan County, Tennessee although Cynthia Baker Dickson and her husband James were enumerated there. Morris and Matilda have never been located in the 1850 census and may have been missed while journeying westward.

Morris and Matilda later moved on to Lawrence County, Missouri, to Vernon County, Missouri in 1854 and then to Barton County, Missouri where they joined Kilby again and are enumerated in the 1860 census in Bakers Grove Township [p. 21]. In 1870 they were enumerated in the Barton County census in Union Township. Morris died 1 January 1877. He and Matilda are both buried in Baker's Grove Cemetery, Sheldon, Missouri.
