27 Oct 1998; mailto:jstamper@mis.net. Received an inquiry from
Sandra Starnes Williams of Abingdon, VA. She is descended from
Mary A. Stamper, b. 22 June 1841 in NC, who married James M.
Adams. This couple lived in the Lee/Scott Co., VA area. Mary's
mother, according to Sandra, was Frances Stamper, b. 1801 in
NC. Mary's father is unknown. I'm not sure how to interpret all
of this. Was Mary born out of wedlock, or was Stamper the married
name and not the maiden name of Mary's mother Frances? We know,
of course, that Frances was an oft-used name for females in the
Jonathan Stamper, Sr. line. Can anyone help with this?

Mar 1998 Bev, I came across this information when I was researching
Thomas D. Ball, the brother of my ancestor, Jasper. I thought
some one might find it helpful, or be able to tell me where she
fits into "the big picture". It's from The History
of Yolo County, California, by Tom Gregory and "other well-known
authors".
"His second
marriage was solemnized in Sacramento, March 24, 1867, uniting
him with Miss Elizabeth N. Stamper, of Bath county, Ky., ...
Mrs. Ball is of Scotch ancestry and was not only closely related
to the Neely family of Welsh descent, and the Ralstons of Scotch
ancestry, but also to Martha Washington, of Virginia. Her great
uncle, John Neely, was one of the earliest settlers of Virginia
and an Indian fighter. Her great-grandfather, Joseph Neely, before
the Revolutionary war, with his wife and a few neighbors defended
a blockhouse in Kentucky from the onslaught of the Indians." 1

14 Feb 1998, mailto:glewis@MIS.Net; Subject George Washington
Stamper and Nancy Nickell; Is there a Bible record listing George
Washington Stamper and Nancy Nickell?? I would like very much
to obtain a copy because this is my wife's family. We have a
photo of their daughter, Martha Stamper who married Henry Johnson
Epperhart in Morgan Co KY. I have struggled to place this George
Washington Stamper born 1818 in NC with the correct family. Some
say he is the son of Thomas Moore Stamper and grandson of James
Stamper and Sarah Moore. This Geo "Wash" Stamper married
Nancy Nickell, dau of Isaac Nickell and Priscilla Jones, on May
31, 1837. In the 1850 Morgan co census he is 32 years old.
There are at least
two George W Stampers in Morgan Co. The other George W Stamper
was born abt 1810 married Jane Nickell on Sep 7, 1840. This Geo
W is 40 years old in the 1850 Morgan Co census. So the big question.
Which family does each of these George Washington Stampers belong?

24 Jan 98 mailto:Gray6064@aol.com Searching for information on
Arnold and Hubert Stamper. Possibly lived in either Wilkes Co
or Iredell Co, NC. Fathers name is "Ruffey" Stamper,
possibly a nickname.
23 Jan 1998 (update) mailto:Gray6064@aol.com My Stamper has been
so frustrating. I'm in NC, within an hour of where Maggie A.
Stamper lived. I've tried everything to get a lead on her, but
nothing. Even her death certificate was zilch. Listed her father
as "Stamper" and her mother as "?". Know
she wasn't hatched. Thought she was probably named Margaret and
went by nickname of Maggie, but her death certificate reads Maggie.
She had to have been from Wilkes or Ashe Co or possibly even
Iredell. Since our last E-mail I have found one additional clue.
An elderly cousin gave me some antique photos of the family.
Included was a picture labeled "Gurney Stamper, cousin.
Killed in train wreck returning from war". It's a picture
of a man in full WWI uniform looking like he's in his mid 20's.
I was so excited, but the cousin knew nothing. Since then, I've
been searching but with no luck. Is there a Gurney Stamper in
your index? [answer; not to date] 21 Jan 98 mailto:BXGC22B@prodigy.com;

I'm new! I'm trying
to find ANYTHING about my ancestress who has always been called
Elizabeth STAMPER CARTER even though she was married and became
Elizabeth DAVIDSON. I have the dandiest picture of her with more
lines on her aged face than you can count! Here is what I know:
Elizabeth STAMPER born:22 May 1796, place: North Carolina, md.
1st) _______ CARTER, son: Henry CARTER marr. Barbara CARMAN.
died: 28 Jul 1865; md 2nd) Silas DAVIDSON, Dallas, Iowa, b. 1
Mar 1794, place: Virginia, died: 21 Jul 1879, place: Van Meter
Twp., Dallas, Iowa. His 1st wife was Phoebe LEWIS, born: NC,
died: KY. What this doesn't tell you is that Elizabeth (Stamper)
and Silas DAVIDSON lived in Montgomery County, Indiana and had
two children there: Daniel Nave DAVIDSON b. 6 Sep 1832, and Robert
DAVIDSON b. 28 Jun 1836.
POSSIBILITES? 1)
Could Elizabeth Stamper Carter have had an illegitmate son who
took her last name? 2) If so, then her middle name was STAMPER
and her last name could have been CARTER! (Her niece, Elizabeth
Dent DAVIDSON, was given her mother's maiden name as a middle
name. Is that a common practice?) 3) My mother told me last night
that she had found an old genealogy worksheet of my grandmother's.
It stated, "Her parents moved to Hendricks County, Indiana
in 1828." 4) Henry CARTER was born in Kentucky and later
shows up on a Hendricks, IN census in the northern part of Eel
River Township, Hendricks County, IN by many other Carters. 5)
That would mean that the Washington GW STAMPER written in the
Bible record I sent to the list was a relative from her mother's
side of the family. Could he be a nephew? 6) Are there "Bastard
Lists" in Kentucky like there were in North Carolina? If
so, Henry CARTER might be listed there.
[note from Kay
Inman] I am inclined to believe that THIS Elizabeth was a Stamper
because of her obvious ties to GW STAMPER. (see bible recs) Can't
comment on the legitimacy of Henry, as I have absolutely no information
to even make a guess.
8 jan 1998 Kay Inman. I know I asked this question before, and
someone had an answer, but I lost it. Can anyone identify this
William? (no dates or place names of any kind cited. Don't know
WHERE it came from). William STAMPER md Mary Elizabeth RUDD .
4 children listed; Bertha, Claude, Charles, and Jack.
8 jan 1998 Kay Inman. There has been an error in posting marriages
of Marion Stamper and Amanda "Mandy" Combs. The database
shows Mandy md 1st in 1902 in Letcher Co KY to Marion Stamper
b. 1877, s/o Hiram "Sheriff Hirmam" Stamper and Suzanne
Hogg. Then the database shows her md. 2nd 1902 in Letcher Co,
KY to Marion Stamper b. 1877, s/o Marion X. Stamper and Nancy
Dyer. Would dearly love to clear this up. Can anyone help me
get her attached to the correct Marion?
7 jan 1998 Kay Inman. Who are the parents of Elizabeth Stamper
Carter Davidson who is listed in the Bible Records page on this
web site? Her bible identifies the family of George Washington
"Wash" Stamper (1818) who md. Nancy Nickell. This is
also an unplaced line. If we can identify Elizabeth, we may be
able to place GW's large line.

6 Jan 98 mailto:jjackson@comteck.com Re: Malissa Stamper - Ky.
Malissa has been a mystery to me for the past 7 years. She appears
on the 1900 Perry Co. Ky. census with her husband Nicholas Combs
as well as the 1910 & 1920 Perry Co. census. Her name is
usually misspelled - Malitia, Malisia, etc. etc. I talked to
my great uncle about her and he used to call her Lith Ann. I
do not know the year of her death but he told me she was buried
on Walker's Branch near Hazard, Ky. The only clue I have as to
her maiden name was the marriage certificate of her son John
(Buck) Combs who listed his parents and it had Malissa STAMPER
as being from Wolfe Co. Ky. I have searched every county in SE
KY and have come up with nothing. I wouldn't think that someone
born in 1858 would be so hard to find. Visit my Homepage
15 Dec 97, Herk Johnson. I am seeking information on Eliza Jane
Stamper who married Joseph Johnson in Morgan County, In. The
marriage license was issued on Dec. 19, 1866 and a JJ Johnson
was the Clerk of the Court. They were married by R. Stamper on
the 19th. I have a copy of the marriage license and I think the
marriage produced eleven children of which my grandfather was
one of them. According to a family Bible, the names of the children
were: Tom, Hattie, Frank (my grandfather), Lillie, Albert, Elbert,
Alma, Allen, Alice, and a half sister Nettie. As you can see,
the Bible does not contain the names of all the children according
to the cousin who has possession of the Bible. I just happened
to locate her and she knows less about the family than I do even
though she still lives in Morgan Co.
