1. Jonathan Stamper,¹ son of Powell Stamper and Mary Martha Brooks, was born on 21 Apr 1719 in Middlesex Co, VA,^¹ was christened on 24 May 1719 in Middlesex Co, VA, and died in 1799 in Wilkes Co, NC at age 80.

The birth and baptism (May 24, 1719) of Jonathan Stamper, Sr., is re co rd ed in the Registry of Christ Church Parish, Middlesex Co, V A. We ha ve no o ther records of Jonathan until we find him, his family, a nd some o ther Sta mpers living in Amherst Co, VA in 1763. We do not kn ow the da te that Jona than Stamper, Sr., arrived in Amherst Co, VA, b ut he was the re in 1755, wh en his son, Joel, was born. Jonathan Stampe r, Sr., and h is family were among the first settlers in t he area that be came Wilkes C o, NC (then Rowan Co, NC). They arrived in Wil kes County ar ound 1767, fr om Amherst Co, VA. The destination of Jonathan S tamper, Sr ., and his fami ly was the land called 'Lord Granville's Domain b etween t he Yadkin and t he Catawba Rivers' in North Carolina. North Caroli na h ad been establish ed originally as a proprietary colony belonging to ei g ht English lord s. In 1729, seven of these lords sold their righ ts to t he colony to the K ing, but one, the Earl of Granville, refus ed to part wi th his share whic h, in 1744, was set apart with specified b oundaries. Pa rt of his 'domai n' consisted of a vast area which had be en organized in 17 49, as Anson C o, but from which Rowan County had be en cut off as a separa te county in 1 753. Shortly after Rowan County h ad been created, the coun ty seat was est ablished and named initially Row an Court House, but this w as later chang ed to Salisbury. North Caroli na was the first colony to be settled by t he yeomen farmers a nd ex-inden tured servants from the tidewater area of V irginia. Prior to 17 52, the re were virtually no settlers in the For ks of the Yadkin. The settl e rs of this region were largely of English sto ck, though there was a sub st antial number of Germans. The Stampers initia lly lived on Bugaboo Cree k, near the present-day to wn of Ronda, Wilkes C o, NC. They moved to t he Roaring River area in the 17 80's. Jonathan Stamp er, Sr., and so me of his sons owned land in Montgome ry Co, VA (which th en included t he territory that is now Kentucky). There are enough recor ds in Wilkes C o, NC for one to determine that the St ampers were in NC sev eral years be fore the first state grants were issu ed to them in the ear ly 1780's. Ye t, the Montgomery Co, VA records provi de enough Stamper info rmation f or one to conclude there was some moving ba ck and forth over t he VA/NC b order before their final settlement in NC. Surry County was form ed from R owan Co, NC in 1770. Wilkes County was form ed from the western p art of S urry County in 1777. Ashe County was formed f rom Wilkes in 179 9, which t hen included Alleghany County and a part of Wau tauga County. Ac cordi ng to the book, 'History of North Carolina Baptists', the Wilkes Co u n ty area had the largest Baptist population of any other area in t he en ti re world during the years 1772-1778. In 1772, Jonathan Stamper, Sr., serv ed as a constable in the King's ser vi ce in the Parish of Saint Jude, Sur ry Co, NC. Constables were appoi nt ed to preserve the peace in the differ ent sections of the county. Jonat han was a patriot during the American Re volution. DAR records state t h at Jonathan's services during the Revoluti onary War was as follows: ' pa id for material aid in Salisbury Distric t, NC for sundries furnished t he m ilitia of NC, VA, & SC as allowed by B rown, Erwin, and Greenlee Audit ors S alisbury District in April 1782'. An other DAR application states: 'J onath an Stamper, Sr., of Surry Co, NC w ho acted in capacity of public ser van t, Patriot, and he furnished hors es and provisions for the Continent al Ar my (actually it would have be en the militia)'. In 1778, Jonathan Sta mper, Sr., was granted a licen se to keep an Ordina ry (tavern) in his dwel ling house, with Richard All en and Benjamin Clevela nd as securities. T he term 'ordinary' in this ins tance was interchangeab le with inn or taver n. It was a place where a tra veller could expect to ob tain lodging not on ly for himself and his famil y, but for his horses as we ll, and he could a lso expect to find food a nd drink. Not only was a licen se required to ope rate an ordinary, but t he court set the prices that t he proprietor mig ht charge. In ord er to be granted a licence, one had to p resent a form al written petitio n. Furthermore, the proprietor of such an e stablishme nt was requir ed to arrange for two citizens of substantial mea ns to ser ve as securiti es. Jonathan Stamper, Sr., lived on his large plantation unt il 1783. He t hen s old his land and moved to upper Wilkes County whe re he died in t he spri ng of 1799. Jonathan Stamper, Sr., was an own er of slaves as we re most farmers of h is day. We know that he owned at le ast three slave s, two women and one b oy named James. We are led to belie ve that Jonath an couldn't read or write because he sign ed his will wi th an 'X' mark. H owever, not everyone in those days who sign ed by mark ' X' were illiterat e, and even if they could not write they cou ld often rea d. Perhaps Rach el was able to read and write. Jonathan Stamper, Sr., di ed testate in t he spring of 1799. His will was pr oved in the April te rm of 1799, in t he Court of Wilkes Co, NC. Jonathan 's personal property w as sold at an e state sale on the 4th and 5th of Ju ne 1799, raising a tot al of £354.2 .5 (pounds, shillings, pence--20 shillin gs in a pound a nd 12 pen ce in a shilling). We have not found any marriage records for Jonathan Stamper, Sr ., b ut he r efers to his wife as 'Rachel Stamper' in his will of 179 3. We n ow know th at Rachel's maiden name was Parks. We know this becau se the Dia ry of E. M. Parks has a 'Rachel Stamper' born 3 Dec. 1733, list ed in it. T his dia ry goes on to say that Rachel's parents were John Par ks and Mary S harp a nd that her grandfather was Thomas Parks.

Oliver Stamper in his book Descendants of James Stamper 1750-1826 t er ms Ja mes Stamper as "farmer, trapper, hunter, and trader". He sa ys th at James a nd wife Sarah Moore Stamper arrived in Kentucky someti me betwe en 1796 and 1825 and th at they may have first lived in what is n ow Letch er Co, Kentucky before migrating to M organ Co, Kentucky. Jam es Stamper a pparently had several daughters in addition to t he two so ns identifi ed by Oliver Stamper. The 1790 census of Randolph Co, North C arol ina lis ts a Jammez Stamper with three sons and six daughters. It se ems that mo st or a ll of the daughters had already married in North Carol ina, and wh en James decid ed to accompany his sons to Kentucky they did n ot follo w. James and his wife Sarah are bu ried at or near Grassy Cre ek in Morg an Co, Kentucky. The following is taken from the book, 'Methodist History of Ada ir C o, KY ,' pages 78 & 79 by Vista Royse Allison: 'One of the earliest f amili es to join the Methodist Church in KY was Josh ua Stamper and his wi fe, Ja ne. She joined first and he followed later. Th ey are the paren ts of Re v. Jonathan Stamper. Mr. & Mrs. Stamper came fr om VA about the y ear 177 8. They were forced to live in forts for twelve ye ars and endu re the hard ships of frontier life.' 'They lived first at Bonnesboro and t hen at 'Stro ndes Station'. Mrs. Stamp er was an extremely sensitive wom an and was oft en in fear she would n ot be among the elect. She was a fai thful Christi an woman and her home w as always open to the weary itinera nt and for ma ny years served as a preac hing place. She led a Godly li fe and the wor ld is better that she lived, f or she trained and sent o ut a Christian fam ily of sons and daughters who l oved and labored for t he cause of Christ .' Their son, Rev. Jonathan Stamper has been quot ed as saying 'I have oft en h eard my parents say they lived without bre ad or salt from the ti me of the ir arrival in Kentucky which was la te in October until the co rn ripen ed in the ensuing summer.'

Joel moved with his family to Wilkes Co, NC (then Rowan County) in 1 76 7, w hen he was 12 years old. He was a minuteman in Captain Jesse Walt on 's Comp any. He stated that he served nine months and twenty-one da ys in t he servi ce. Joel's Revolutionary War pension was filled on Februa ry 4, 18 33. His f ile number is S-3999, was issued on April 30, 183 3. He was grant ed $32. 33 per annum. In the Daughters of the American Rev olution Patri ot Ind ex of 1966, his death date is listed as April 30, 183 3. On May 5, 1 801, Joel purchased 100 acres on Fork of the Roaring Riv er f or £50. Th is included the plantation on which Matthew Ramey former ly lived . Accordi ng to the minutes of early Wilkes Co, NC: Joel Stamp er helped to l ay o ff road in 1803. We know that Joel owned land near h is father and his brot hers. Joel w as a baptist.Joel Stamper received a p ension of #32.33 per ye ar to commen ce in 1831. He was a minute Man f or nine months and twenty o ne days.

H is pension record nu mber was S3999. 'I was born in Amherst c o, VA on M ay 17, 1755 and continued to live the re until I was twelve yea rs ol d. In 1867 my father brought the fami ly to Wilkes Co, NC. whe re I liv ed until I entered the service. I was a v olunteer in Captain Je sse Walto n's Company of Minute Men. About a week af ter, I marched to Sa lisbury, w here I was stationed with General Rutherfo rd for three mont hs at the e nd of which time I was discharged and return ed home.

After a short time I was again ordered out under the same Cap ta in to go ag ainst the Tories who had embodied themselves near Cross C re ek or Fayettevi lle. We marched to Dobious Cross Roads near Salem w he re we were join ed by General Rutherford and then marched to Cro ss or Cr op Creek. Befo re we reached there most their men had been kill ed or tak en prisoner. T he prisoners were sent to Virginia in char ge of light hors emen. The remai ning men were discharged from General Ru therford's army a nd we returned ho me after two months.

Not long after this, the information was received by Colonel Cleve la nd th at Colonel Ferguson was advancing from South Carolina with a l ar ge bo dy of British and Tories. Colonel Cleveland and Colonel Campbe ll 's Virgin ia Regt. were near Winter Fort in Burke County and they mar ch ed into the e dge of South Carolina to the Cherokee Ford on Broad Ri ve r. That part of t he army which could procure horses went on to King 's Mo untain to meet Ferg uson. I had no horse and couldn't get one, so w as le ft behind and did n ot reach the battle ground in time. The batt le was ov er and the troops we re returning with the prisoners and were tw enty fi ve miles on this si de of the battle ground before we joined them.

We then marched with the prisoners as far as Salem, North Carol in a. Wh en I reached Salem, I received my discharge. I had been gone t hr ee mont hs this time. I also served at the command of Captain John Mor gan .

After this I returned to Wilkes County where I remained. The re is no do cu mentary evidence to prove my service. I do not remember re ceiving a ny wri tten discharge. There is a record of my age in the fami ly bibl e. Capt. J ohn Holloway, and Capt Benjamin Hammons are pers on to wh om I am well kno wn in this neighborhood who can testify to my ch aracte r, William Spicer, J ohn Pruitt and Wm. Jonathan married Mary Ann 'Polly' Davis before 1780 in NC. Mary was born about 1760 and died about 1800 in Ashe Co, NC about age 40.

According to tradition, Mary 'Polly' Davis was killed by men named H ar t, C ox, and Bledsoe who were attempting to rob her of $700 in gold w hi ch she h ad buried near her home. This story was repeated by the la te Wi ll H. Danie l, a West Virginia lawyer who was a descendant of Jonath an a nd Polly. He w as one of the first to do serious research on this lin e. Ac cording to hi m, the robbers killed Polly, but did not get the gol d. Roy W yatt, also a d escendat of Jonathan and Polly, says that in the e arly 1900 's a search w as conducted around Jonathan and Polly's old homes ite in pre sent-day Alleg hany Co, NC and some of the gold was unearthe d. Jonathan St amper, Jr.'s will was written in 1822, about nine years be fo re his deat h, and makes reference to his wife, so if he was only marri ed o nce, the e vent, if true, happened sometime after that, possibly ev en aft er Jonath an Jr., had died and left his wife a widow.

Records show that Jesse was a midget, as were two of his daughter s, Ra ch el and Delphia. We do not have a record of his height, but accor di ng to le gend, he was so short he had to ride his horse to sow wheat a nd r ye.

Jesse and Barbara owned a large farm. Jesse inherited his fathers plan ta ti on and a negro boy named James.

Jesse married Barbara Devait ⁵ before 1787 in Wilkes Co, NC?. Barbara was born about 1772 and died after 1830 in Prob Wilkes Co, NC.

The followng court record names 4 of Jacob Stamper's children: It was this day satisfactorly proven to the satisfaction of this court in Owen County by the auth (oath) of George Wood who is a crucible person that Jacob Stamper late of Owen County Kentucky departed this life on the 15th of June 1834 and that at the time of his death he left no widow but the following children towit Jonathan Stamper Jepe Stamper (Jepe is a German way of writing the double 'S' in Jesse), Nancy Wood late Nancy Stamper Elizabeth Morgan late Elizabeth Stamper all of whom still survive and are residents of Owen County and the court further certifies that this is further proven satisfactorily that the late Jacob Stamper was the identical person named in an original certificate presented to the court and respected by them bearing the date on the 5 day of Feby 1833 and signed by Levi 'Cap' Secretary of War and numbered 5226 by which said certificate he became intitled to receive sixty dollars per annum during his natural life prov the 4 of March 1831.

In the pension application of Jacob Stamper (1762-1834) dated October 1, 1832, it states: 'resides Exceedingly indigent circumstances and totally unable to provide for himself and family by reason of his almost total blindness in which condition he has been for several years past'. This disease is called Retinitis Pigmentosa and it is a progressive degenerative disease of the retina of the eye. This results in night blindness and a total loss of vision in later life. This disorder is passed direct from parent to child, never skipping a generation.

Absher 'Stamper, Jacob 16544 Pvt Co comanded by Capt Allen, Regt commanded by Col Cleveland in N.C. line 18 mos from 1778; inscribed on Rolls Ky 4th Mar 1831. Certificate pension issued 5 f eb 1833, semi annual allowance ending 5 Mar 1833-Owen Co, KY 4 Oct 1833 came Jacob Stamper aged 69 yrs & some mos & made declaration that he was born 15 dec 1765 Amherst Co, VA. His father moved to Wilkes Co N.C.

From Cheryl Malo: Rev War pension app for Jacob states he fought at King 's Mtn, and was a scout. Served with brothers Joshua and Jesse, and b-i-ls Toliver and Burton. On a trip to the New River area, they captured and hung a Tory, believed to be Zachariah Goss, according to Draper Manuscripts. Jacob had a land entry in 1779 for 100 acres near Little Mountain. Jury duty in 1801 in Wilkes Co, NC and 'lay off road' in 1803. History of Wilkes Co gives Jacob's birth year as 1762. (The family would have still been in Amherst Co, VA that year?).

Per records of Jackie Stamper (1997) Jacob to Wilkes Co, NC abt 1767, Gallitin co, KY 1810, to Eagle Creek, Owen Co, KY 1813. In 1778 Jacob entered the Am. Rev. in service of the United States as a volunteer in a company commanded by Capt. Richard Allen and Wm. Reynolds was the lieutenant and that the company was attached to a regiment commanded by Colonel Benjamin Cleveland. Jacob was a resident of Wilkes co, NC and was about 16 years old when he volunteered.

In the book, 'The Heritage of Wilkes County', there is an article submitted by the late Samuel Elihu Sebastian, Sr. It states, 'Joel, Jacob, and Joshua STAMPER and the son-in-laws, John P. BURTON and Jesse TOLLIVER served in the Revolutionary War. Jacob Stamper was a man of small stature, served as a mounted scout, he not being able to walk long trips. Jacob and his sons Jesse and Jonathan went to Cincinnati, Ohio, where they made brick and built brick houses. They later came back to Owen Co, Kentucky and spent their last days there'. This book goes on to state, 'Jesse married Nancy SEBASTIAN and his brother Jonathan, married Mary SEBASTIAN her sister, daughters of Benjamin Sebastian of Wilkes Co, N. C.'

Stamper Footprints states he was less than 5 feet tall. He traveled to Cincinnati with two sons, Jesse and Johnathan, to build brick houses. Later the three traveled to Owen Co, KY where the two sons met and married two Sebastian sisters.served in Rev War.

Per Judy <Norfold@aol.com>; It is my understanding that they were in Wilkes Co. then went on to Ky. For some reason Jacob Stamper moved back and forth for a few times before he finally settles in Owen Co. What is interesting is that Jonathan's son, Hugh, married an Owen Co girl and settled there. The others did not. Hugh has been said to be a son of Jesse Stamper, but his son was named Hiram. All of Jesse's 17 children have been accounted for and Hugh is not one. It seems that our families were more mobile than was previously thought.

Jacob married Susannah 'Susan' about 1780 in Wilkes Co, NC. Susannah was born about 1765 in Wilkes Co, NC and died before 1829 in ? Owen Co, KY?.

Jacob next married Judy Peake,¹¹ daughter of Nathaniel? Peake and Unknown, on 24 Nov 1829 in Owen Co, KY ¹².^,13 Judy was born about 1765 in KY and died before 1834. Another name for Judy was Judy Peake Cobb.

General Notes: Judy is believed to be the daughter of Nathaniel Peake. She had been p re vi ously married to Samuel Cobb (1735-1809).

8 F vii. Martha Frances 'Frankie' Stamper ¹⁴ ^,15 was born on 14 Feb 1767 in Amherst Co, VA and died in 1854 in Sparta, Alleghany Co, NC at age 87.

Per Tolliver website http://www.tolliverfamily.com/html/genealogy/jesse.htm notes 'Frankey was allowed pension on her application executed December 27, 1842, while a resident of Ashe Co, NC.

Martha married Jesse Tolliver ¹⁶ on 8 Oct 1782 in Wilkes Co, NC. Jesse was born about 1756 in Prince William Co, VA and died on 4 Mar 1838 in Ashe Co, NC about age 82. Another name for Jesse was Jesse Taliaferro.

from Cheryl Malo: Though a couple early books regarding the family of Jesse Taliaferro list the father as Charles, to my knowledge this is not proven!!
It is generally admitted now that neither John nor Charles could have possibly been the father of Jesse. There are a few scholars working on finding a father for Jesse! Points to remember: 1. Charles was rather diligent about recording things. His will does not list Jesse as a child, and the birth dates would have made Jesse a pretty late change of life baby! 2. John also had numerous land titles, and other public records which often mentioned his children. No mention of a Jesse! I would love to attach him to someone, but.......for the time being, I think he will remain without parents!; Cheryl's comment is in response to the following Mabel I. Va ., d 1838 m FRANKIE STAMPER, 1782 Wilkes Cty. N.C.... JESSE being the son of CHARLES/ANN KEMP is obviously incorrect because it would make ANN KEMP 62 when JESSE was born. We feel we are missing a generation.
Jesse Taliaferro changed his name to Tolliver in 1782. From 1777 to 1782, he was enlisted as a private in Wilkes Co, NC. Jesse and Martha lived in vari ous locations in what is now Alleghany Co, N C. Land grants give such descriptions as Jewel Swamp, south side of Peach Bottom Mountain, Little River, Glade Creek, and Dog Creek. They owned several farms at one time and it is believed they had slaves to help with the farming

9 F viii. Susannah Stamper ¹⁷ was born on 22 Aug 1767 in Wilkes Co, NC, died on 10 Aug 1845 in Lawrence Co, IN at age 77, and was buried in Aug 1845 in Burton Gap Cemetery.

Susannah married John Pleasant Burton,¹⁷ son of Richard Burton and Mary Pleasant, in 1779 in Ashe Co, NC. John was born on 8 Jul 1758 in Richmond, VA, died on 4 Jul 1836 in Mitchell, Lawrence Co, IN at age 77, and was buried in Jul 1836 in Burton Gap Cemetery.
